LIMA, June 2 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed after a truck was swept away by a mudslide caused by intense rains in the southern Peruvian Ayacucho region on Sunday, said the national emergency operations center (COEN) on Monday.

The COEN added on social media platform X that members of the National Police, the Army, the General Volunteer Fire Corps of Peru and the District Municipality managed to recover the bodies of the six people who were missing after the mudslide in the Anco district.

According to the state news agency Andina, the "large mudslide" dragged the vehicle around 5:30 a.m. Sunday local time, when it was traveling on the road that connects the districts of Anco and Llochegua.

Tons of mud and water dragged the vehicle into a ravine more than 100 meters deep, leaving the truck buried, which made rescue difficult.

Meanwhile, another truck traveling on the same route was partially buried, but the passengers managed to escape unharmed.

Medical brigades from the Regional Health Directorate (Diresa) arrived at the scene, collaborating with the rescue efforts and caring for those affected. ■
