MADRID, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Marc Soler of UAE Team Emirates XRG produced a powerful ride to win the 14th stage of the Vuelta a Espana on Saturday, becoming the fourth rider from his team to take a stage win in this year's race.
The 135.9-kilometer stage between Aviles and La Farrapona contained a third and two first category climbs, with a mountain-top finish, and was all the more difficult as it followed hot on the heels of Friday's brutal climb up L'Angliru.
Soler was able to get into the breakaway of the day, leaving his break companions away at the foot of the final climb up the Alto de la Farrapona, with a lead of around four minutes over the main group.
The problem for the Spaniard was that his UAE team was looking to put pressure on overall leader Joan Vingegaard (Visma-Lease-a-Bike) to allow Joao Almeida to try and cut the Dane's lead.
A succession of UAE riders, such as Juan Ayuso and Jay Vine got to the front of the peloton to try and leave Vingegaard, who had looked to be on the limit on Friday, exposed.
In the end it was Jai Hindley of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe who launched an attack in his quest for third place, with Almeida and Vingegaard close behind.
A strong headwind on the final straights tested Soler's resolve in his solo quest, but his legs didn't let him down and he took the stage, with Vingegaard sprinting ahead of Almeida in the final meters to take a six-second time bonus and extend his overall lead to 48 seconds. ■
