GENEVA, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- China stands ready to actively participate in improving global human rights governance, Chen Xu, China's permanent representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, said here on Tuesday.
Chen made the remarks when addressing the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council. He elaborated on China's position and proposals in the field of global human rights governance.
Chen noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the UN, and that global governance still faces severe challenges.
The China-proposed Global Governance Initiative aims to promote international order toward greater fairness and justice, he said. On human rights governance, Chen underscored three key principles:
First, China upholds sovereign equality and the rule of international law. All parties should abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, respect the sovereignty of countries and their right to independently choose their own human rights development paths, and oppose interference in internal affairs under the pretext of human rights. For instance, China supports the just cause of the Palestinian people in restoring their legitimate national rights.
Second, China advocates multilateralism and more robust international cooperation. There is no universally applicable model for human rights development, Chen said, adding that the diversity of world civilizations should be respected, and dialogue and cooperation should be prioritized. China firmly opposes unilateral coercive measures and other acts of unilateralism.
Third, China calls for a people-centered and action-oriented approach. People are both participants in and beneficiaries of global governance. It is necessary to reaffirm the founding mission of the Human Rights Council to promote and protect human rights, give equal attention to all categories of rights, and advance rights in a balanced manner, while accelerating the realization of economic, social, and cultural rights and the right to development.
Chen emphasized that China is prepared to actively participate in efforts to enhance global human rights governance and collaborate with all parties to promote the advancement of global human rights. ■
